Frequently Asked Questions
What types of counseling do you offer?
At iMpande, we provide both phone consultations and telehealth services.
What is the cost of counseling?
iMpande currently does not offer a Medicare rebate, but we plan to in the future. The cost of our services varies depending on your needs. Individual counseling is priced based on duration, while other services are priced according to specific requirements. Costs will be discussed during your initial free consultation. You do not need a mental health referral to attend.
What are the qualifications of the counselor/therapist?
I am a qualified social worker and counselor with 16 years of experience in various counseling services, including roles as a sexual assault counselor/advocate and providing psychological support in diverse settings. I am also a member of the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW).
How regularly will I see my counselor?
While many counselors or therapists offer weekly sessions, the frequency can vary depending on the type of therapy and your personal needs.
What does privacy and confidentiality mean?
I am legally bound by law and professional standards to maintain the confidentiality of what you share with me. However, there are limits to confidentiality, which we will discuss during our initial consultation. The AASW Code of Ethics states in 1.07 Privacy and Confidentiality that social workers should respect clients' rights to privacy and only solicit private information when professionally justified.
What is the difference between counseling and therapy?
The terms 'counseling' and 'therapy' are often used interchangeably, though they can have different focuses. Counseling generally addresses specific issues over a shorter period, while therapy might explore deeper issues over a longer duration. At iMpande, we offer both and tailor our approach to meet your needs, guided by you throughout your journey.
What is a professional body?
Professional bodies, or member organisations, self-regulate the professions of counseling, therapy, and social work. Membership requires meeting certain standards and adhering to a code of ethics and complaints procedure.
How will I benefit from counseling?
Research suggests that a good match between counselor and client is the most significant predictor of successful therapy, more important than the therapist’s training or approach. Counseling can help with more than just mental illness or major life transitions; it can also aid in navigating various issues, clarifying challenges, and promoting personal growth.
Other benefits of counseling include:
Learning to manage uncomfortable emotions
Navigating diverse issues
Clarifying and addressing challenges
Unlocking your potential
Moving past trauma
Forming healthy habits
Improving interpersonal relationships
Working towards your goals
Living a value-based life
